How the contrast comparison hook works

A strong contrast hook puts two ideas close together, then lets the gap do the work.

It might compare the old job with the new job, like example 9. It might set AI hype against real systems, like example 3. Or it might make a sharp cultural shift feel funny, like example 1.

The opening stops the scroll because the reader has to place themselves on one side. That creates dwell time before they even reach the lesson.

Use this when you’re explaining a shift in AI, a founder lesson, a market change, or a product truth that people keep missing.

The common mistake is making both sides too vague. “Old AI” and “new AI” won’t land. Name the workflow, the tool, the buyer, the meeting, or the first comment debate you want to start.

Write your own

  1. Pick one clear shift your reader already feels in their work.
  2. Name the old behavior in plain words, with a detail they would recognize.
  3. Put the new behavior right after it, so the contrast is easy to see.
  4. Cut any setup before the hook, because the first line has to earn the read.
  5. Add a sharp second line that makes people want to comment, repost, or argue in the first hour.
  6. Check that the contrast leads into your actual point, instead of acting like a cute opener.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between skills and hooks in AI?

Skills are what you can do with AI, like model design, evals, prompts, data work, or shipping products. Hooks are how you get people to care about that work on LinkedIn. A founder can have strong AI skills and still lose readers if the first line feels flat.

What are contrast comparison hooks for AI / ML Founders?

They’re LinkedIn openings that place two ideas side by side so the reader sees a gap right away. For AI / ML Founders, that could be hype versus shipped product, demos versus users, research speed versus sales speed, or agent talk versus real value.

When should I use a contrast hook on LinkedIn?

Use it when your post is about a change people are already noticing. It works well for market shifts, product lessons, founder mistakes, AI adoption, hiring, and customer behavior. The hook gives readers a fast reason to pause, then the body explains why it matters.

Why do contrast hooks get reactions?

They make the reader take a side. If the contrast feels true, people keep reading. If it feels bold, they may comment. If it explains a shift their peers care about, they may repost it. That mix helps the post gain attention in the first hour.

How do I make a contrast hook sound less generic?

Use concrete parts of AI work. Mention evals, agents, demos, Slack threads, sales calls, customer tickets, dirty data, first comment debates, or a real workflow. The more specific the contrast, the less it sounds like a template.

How we build this data

Our library collects LinkedIn posts that actually earned high engagement, deduplicates them, and re-checks their reaction counts on a rolling schedule. Every number on this page comes from that dataset, none of it is estimated.
